Mazda RX-8

So we finally did. We bought a brand new 2005 Mazda RX-8. We were originally going to wait until we moved to Utah before we bought one, but we found a dealer that was trying to unload their '05 inventory, and the deal was just too good to pass up.

This car is absolutely amazing. It does have a few quirks: the thing drinks oil like a little kid drinks Kool-aid (the rotary engine runs HOT). The gas mileage is disappointing at best, embarrassing at worst. I readily admit, it is finicky, but I don't care - I love it despite its weaknesses.

The 1.3 liter, 2-rotor RENESIS engine found in the RX-8 puts out 232 bhp, but a meager 159 lb-ft of torque. It certainly doesn't pin your ears back off the line, but with a near 50/50 weight distribution, this car handles like a dream. And once you hit that 9,000 RPM redline, you find yourself in a place that piston engines can only dream about. Posted by Picasa
